DEC 29, 2014

Honor the world’s greatest unsung heroes, runners up and unlikely winners who have pulled off the unexpected on Underdog Day! For those that may not know, an “underdog” is a person in a competition or other event who is popularly expected to lose or fail. The individual expected to win is called the favorite or top dog.
Originally, an underdog was a shipbuilder who stood in a dark pit and helped to saw planks of wood from beneath whilst the overdog, a supervisor of sorts, sawed the planks from above. The underdog got all dirty and covered in sawdust, yet the overdog got all of the credit for the hard work carried out. The first recorded uses of the term occurred in the second half of the nineteenth century; its first meaning was “the beaten dog in a fight”. An “underdog bet” was a bet on the underdog for which the odds were always considerably higher.
Established by Peter Moeller in 1976, Underdog Day is the time to honor all of life’s recognized hard-workers. The truth is that a lot of heroes would not be who they are, and would not have achieved what they’ achieved, if it wasn’t for their humble sidekicks, the underdogs. Imagine Batman without Robin, or Sherlock Holmes without Watson. Not quite the same, right?

History

The Ganges River

Sacred to Hindus, the 1,560-mile (2,510-km) Ganges River in northern India rises from the Gangotri glacier in the Himalayas and empties into the Bay of Bengal after branching into many distributaries. Although the river is highly polluted due to its proximity to major population centers, a rare species of freshwater dolphin and a critically endangered type of shark live in its waters, and its fertile plain supports many crops.

Opalia

The ancient Roman fertility goddess Ops was known by several different names—among them Rhea, Cybele, Bona Dea, Magna Mater, Thya, and Tellus. She married Saturn and was the mother of Jupiter. She is usually portrayed as a matron, with a loaf of bread in her left hand and her right hand opened as if offering assistance. Not much is known about what actually took place during the Opalia, but it appears that women played an important role in the festival. Because Ops was a fertility goddess, she was often invoked by touching the earth.

Rare Rhino on Brink of Extinction

northern white rhino died at the San Diego Zoo this week, leaving only five in the world. Only one male remains, and is considered unable to reproduce naturally due to old age. An international team of experts is now considering ways to save the species, including the possibility of in vitro fertilization. Hopes for natural breeding were dashed earlier this year when a younger male died in October. Northern white rhinos have been hunted to near extinction for their horns.

1154Henry II was crowned King of England in London's Westminster Abbey.
1843A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, a novella about the miser Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation after being visited by three Christmas ghosts, was first published.
1903 - The Williamsburg Bridge opened in New York City. It opened as the largest suspension bridge on Earth and remained the largest until 1924. It was also the first major suspension bridge to use steel towers to support the main cable.
1917 - The first games of the new National Hockey League (NHL) were played. Five teams made up the league: Toronto Arenas, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Bulldogs, the Montreal Canadiens and the Montreal Wanderers.
1918 - Robert Ripley began his "Believe It or Not" column in "The New York Globe".
1984 - Ted Hughes was appointed England's poet laureate.

How To Clean A Wool Blanket With Snow

Wool blankets are one of the most coveted finds at flea markets these days. They are practical, durable, and fashionable. There's a great way to clean them that costs only your time —and maybe your comfort if you don't have a big warm winter coat.  For best results try this in freshly fallen, dry, powdery snow. Wet, heavy snow could end up getting the blanket really soggy and messy.

What You Need

Materials
  • Dry, powdery snow
  • Clean broom

    Instructions

    1. Shake the blanket well, releasing any dust or loose dirt. Hang outside and let acclimate to the temperature for at least a half hour.
    2. Lay the blanket in 3" to 5" of snow, giving yourself a large area to work in. With the broom, flip a good amount of snow across the entire surface.

    3. Beat the snow all around the blanket with the flat side of the broom. The trace amounts of ammonia in the snow will react with the cold air and cause any dirt or grime to solidify and fall out of the blanket.

    4. Let the snow sit on the blanket for 15-20 minutes before flipping it over and repeating steps 1-3 on the other side.
    5. Shake as much excess snow off the blanket as you possibly can before hanging it over a railing or clothesline. Leave it to hang for 20-30 minutes to allow the snow to sublimate. The snow will go from its solid phase to vapor without actually getting the blanket wet. Science is magic.
