Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Elected to an unprecedented four presidential terms, Roosevelt guided the US through the Great Depression and World War II. He instituted the New Deal program to promote economic recovery and social reform and, as war spread in Europe, prepared for the possibility that the US would enter the war. When it finally did, he led the nation to the threshold of victory, dying in office less than a month before Germany's surrender to the Allies.

St. Charles's Day

Charles I, crowned king of England in 1625, was illegally executed on January 30, 1649, primarily for defending the Anglican Church. His body was secretly buried in Windsor Castle, and he was widely acclaimed as a martyr. A royal decree ordered a special service on this day to be in the Book of Common Prayer from 1662 to 1859. It also ordered it to be a day of national fasting. The anniversary of this event is commemorated by the Society of Charles the Martyr with an annual service at the site of his execution in Whitehall, London.

Litvinenko's Autopsy Called "Most Dangerous" Ever

The 2006 autopsy of murdered ex-KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko was likely the most dangerous ever conducted, a pathologist told a UK inquiry this week. Litvinenko died of multiple organ failure after drinking tea dosed with polonium-210—a highly radioactive isotope that may have been undetectable post-mortem if police had not taken the unusual move of having him tested by atomic scientists just before he died. During the autopsy, pathologists wore protective suits with hoods fed with filtered air to avoid exposure to radiation.

If You Were Born Today, January 30

You are multi-talented and capable of practically anything once you set your mind to it. It's the finding of something to focus on that can be a problem. You need a very big project or challenging path in order to gain satisfaction. A true freedom lover, feeling caged in by anything or anyone is one of the worst feelings for you. You are very intelligent, but sometimes think a little too much which can bring on states of unnecessary worry if you are not careful. Famous people born today: Gene Hackman, Vanessa Redgrave, Christian Bale, Dick Martin, Ruth Brown.
