Edward VI Crowned King of England

Edward VI succeeded his father, Henry VIII, to the throne at age nine and had a brief but tumultuous reign. War with France broke out in 1549 over the possession of Boulogne. At home, the peasantry grew disgruntled at the enclosure of the common land, Edward's advisers engaged in ruthless political scheming, and religious inclinations began to shift in favor of Protestantism—the king's religion.

Joshua Slocum

Slocum was a Canadian seaman and adventurer who, in 1898, became the first man to circumnavigate the globe on his own, traveling 46,000 mi (74,000 km) in three years. His account of the voyage, Sailing Alone Around the World, became a classic of travel literature and brought him worldwide fame. In November 1909, he disappeared during another voyage and was declared legally dead 15 years later.

University Accidentally Accepts, then Rejects, Hundreds

Roughly 800 applicants to Carnegie Mellon University's graduate program in computer science received word this week of their acceptance into the program, one of the country's elite—only to find out the next day that the acceptance emails had been sent in error. A spokesman for the school attributed the error to "serious mistakes" in the school's system. Mishaps with acceptance letters have become all too common in recent years, perhaps most notoriously at the University of California at San Diego, which in 2009 sent acceptance emails to all 46,000 applicants.

You possess tremendous poise and grace and while you may come across as very patient and calm, you can be impulsive and restless. Sensitive and concerned, partnerships mean a lot to you. You are always aware of others and their needs, and this is factored into your own decisions. You thoroughly enjoy being there for someone you love. Creative and intuitive, you are able to make something of your talents, but were not meant to focus on only one or two paths. As much as you crave security, you also need movement and small changes to keep you inspired. Famous people born today: Kurt Cobain, Cindy Crawford, Buffy Saint Marie, Gloria Vanderbilt, Sidney Poitier, Rihanna, Patty Hearst, Kelsey Grammer, Ivana Trump.

While touring Arizona’s Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, Emma Rogers and her partner were undeterred from a day of sightseeing by the stormy weather sweeping the landscape. Here, a mass of thunderclouds hovers above the Mitten Buttes, a scene made more dramatic by a bolt of lightning. “While it was a lucky shot,” writes Rogers, “I feel like it perfectly captured the atmosphere of the day.”

CrockPot Sweet Potato Soup Recipe

The first time I made this, I only used a cup of broth and it had the consistency of applesauce. I liked it, but it was a bit weird with only one cup, so now I use 2.

I dug through the fridge and freezer and ecstatically discovered a neglected bag of frozen chicken broth. The fridge revealed 3 sweet potatoes that needed attention and we still had a bit of cream leftover from the crème brulee and the fish chowder. The pantry held a few cans of mangoes. So I put them all together.

The Ingredients:
--3 sweet potatoes
--2 cups broth (chicken or vegetable)
--1 can sliced mangoes
--pinch of allspice (or a pinch each of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves)
--1/2 cup heavy cream (to be added after cooking)

The Directions:

--peel and cube sweet potato
--put into crockpot, add broth and entire can of mangoes
--stir in spices

cover and cook on high for 4 hours, low for 8 or until potatoes are tender

It will look weird. Really weird.

Use a hand blender to pulverize the potatoes and mangoes When fully blended, stir in the heavy cream. Add more if you feel it needs more liquid. Cover and cook on high another 15-20 minutes, or until heated through fully.

The Verdict:
very, very yummy!!! I wish I had a sprig of mint leaves or something ala-Food-Network so it would have been better plated--it was really quite good. I also wish that it was orange like the stuff in the can, and not pale yellow.
I had another bowl for lunch and the potatoes sucked up more of the moisture so they turned into more of a whipped potato consistency. It was still very good, but could no longer be considered a soup.
It freaks me out how sweet sweet potatoes can be! It seriously tasted like I dumped in a whole cup of sugar.
