Baby's Day MAY 2, 2015

DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Baby's Day

Smiley, squishy, faces are perfect reasons to put Baby Day on the map. Although it’s difficult to pinpoint why, or where this day originated, we can easily speculate! Anyone who has ever yearned for, had, or known a baby, could list dozens of reasons why babies are special. Babies are not just cute, but they are innocent in a way that helps you to see goodness in the world. They give you hope, happiness, and make you strive to become a better person. What more could you ask for?
Mark Baby Day in your calendar, and use it to cherish the baby you have, or plan for the baby you want. If you aren't planning on making babies any time soon, or your ‘baby’ is walking around in 6 inch heels, or sporting a 5 o’clock shadow, take this day to celebrate with a niece, nephew, or grandchild. Show them how blessed you feel to have them in your life, and have a fantastic day.

History

First Ascent of Shishapangma (1964)

Located in south-central Tibet near the border of Nepal, Shishapangma is the fourteenth highest mountain in the world and the lowest of the eight-thousanders—peaks in the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges that exceed a height of 8,000 m (26,247 ft). Scaled in 1964, it was the last eight-thousander to be climbed because China imposed severe travel restrictions on foreigners at the time. It is considered one of the easiest eight-thousanders to summit.

Athanasius Kircher (1601?)

One of history's great polymaths, Kircher was a German archeologist, mathematician, biologist, astronomer, musicologist, and physicist who knew Hebrew, Aramaic, Coptic, Persian, Latin, Greek, and various modern languages. He tried to decipher one of the most ancient writing systems—Egyptian hieroglyphics—but most of his thoughts on the subject proved incorrect. An avid inventor, he built playful devices including a talking and eavesdropping statue that used a primitive intercom.

Irrigation Festival

The Irrigation Festival is the oldest continuous festival in Washington, held since 1896 in Sequim. Originally known as "May Days," the festival celebrated the opening of the first ditch to bring water from the Dungeness River to the arid Sequim prairie. In the early days, there were horse races, dancing, a keg of beer hidden in the brush, and tables loaded with food. Today, thousands come for a week of activities: a grand parade, a loggers' show, a high school operetta, crafts and flower exhibits, dances, music, and the Ditchwalkers Clam and Spaghetti Dinner.

The residents of Jellyfish Lake on Eil Malk—one of the Rock Islands of Palau—surround a snorkeler in their midst. The saltwater lake’s golden jellyfish, harmless to humans, spend much of their lives following the sun as it makes its daily progress across the sky. For these jellies, sunlight is essential: It nourishes the algae-like organisms that live symbiotically in their tissues.

Creamy Beef Over Noodles CrockPot Recipe

We had a busy Saturday this past week and I didn't have a meal planned. Usually that means take-out or macaroni and cheese, but instead I dug into the depths of the freezer and found a forgotten bag of frozen stew meat.

I wasn't sure exactly what to do with it, so just kept pulling stuff out of cabinets. The end result was actually pretty good, and although the kids dipped their meat into A-1 sauce (weirdos) we sat down together for a nice meal that was free (instead of a good $40 restaurant meal)

The Ingredients.

2 pounds stew meat
2 tablespoons butter (salted or unsalted; your choice)
1/4 cup milk (I used soy)
1 tablespoon gluten free worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon black pepper (I like things peppery, so I use a lot, but not everybody does!!)
2 tablespoon dried minced onion (1 one small yellow onion, finely diced)
1/4 cup beef broth
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon herbs de provence
1/2 block of cream cheese (4 ounces) (not pictured)

The Directions.

I plopped the frozen meat into the crockpot---it was so frozen that it stood up, so I poked at it with a wooden spoon until it behaved and stayed inside.

We were on the way to swim lessons, so I didn't do anything at all except for dump everything on top. I have no idea in which order, it really doesn't matter. Don't put in the cream cheese yet---save it for later.

Cook on low for 10-12 hours. I cooked this for 10, then tasted the broth. I liked it, but felt like it needed something---like cream cheese.

Squeeze in a half block of cream cheese, and stir until it is incorporated.
Serve over hot pasta.

The Verdict.

This was a nice, hearty, but not overly rich meal that we all enjoyed. I've been picking at the leftovers, and they've held up nicely. I like that this doesn't call for "cream of something" soup or a packet of onion soup mix. Sometimes I am told that all crockpot food tastes alike. IT DOES, if you always use cream of something soup and onion soup mix!!

$1 Million to the First to Live to 123 Years
By Sumitra
Moldovan businessman and multi-millionaire Dmitry Kaminskiy is passionate about longevity – so much so that he’s offering a prize of $1 million to the first person to reach the age of 123 years. He himself dreams of living forever and hopes that his generous gift will trigger a new generation of ‘supercentenarians’ (people over 110 years of age).
“We live in the most exciting era of human development when technologies become exponential and transformative,” said Kaminskiy, a senior partner of Hong Kong-based firm Deep Knowledge Ventures. “They may not realize it, but some of the supercentenarians alive today may see the dawn of the next century if they live long enough for these transformative technologies to develop.”
“I hope that my prize will help some of them desire longer lifespans and make their approaches to living longer a little more competitive,” he added.

The Dirt: seed strip garland gift

Here’s an idea for your next party favor or house warming gift.

Make a seed strip garland and wrap it around a bottle or vase.  Add directions and you have a nice, useful gift.

Here’s how you can make this project:

Seed Strip Garland:
  • Cut out pieces of newspaper or other recyclable paper into leaf shapes. I used  telephone book white pages.
  • Make a paste out of flour and water - approximately one tablespoon of flour and two tablespoons of water.
  • Using the paste and a small paint brush, glue a seed to each paper leaf. Let dry thoroughly.
  • Glue the leaves to a piece of string to make a garland.

Vase:
  • Recycle an old bottle and wrap the seed strip garland around the vase.
  • Add planting and care instructions.
The seed strips are meant to be planted with the paper and string. The seeds are then evenly spaced in your garden and paper and string will eventually compost.

This is a nice low-cost gift that can be used for a variety of gift-giving occasions.

If you want to raise the wow-factor, put your vase and garland in a basket and add gardening tools, gloves or other fun items.
