History

Beethoven's Ninth Symphony Premieres in Vienna (1824)

The Symphony No. 9 in D Minor is the last complete symphony composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. One of the best known works of the Western repertoire, it is considered one of Beethoven's greatest masterpieces. Incorporating part of Johann Schiller's "Ode to Joy," sung by soloists and a chorus, it is the first symphony in which a major composer utilizes human voices on the same level as instruments.

Olympe de Gouges (1748)

Born Marie Gouze, de Gouges was a French author whose feminist writings during the French Revolution demanded the same rights for French women that French men were demanding. In 1791, alarmed that the new constitution did not address woman's suffrage, she wrote Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen, challenging the practice of male authority and the notion of male-female inequality.

Festa di San Nicola

The Festa di San Nicola (Festival of St. Nicholas) is celebrated in Italy on the anniversary of the transfer of the saint's relics by a group of 11th-century sailors from Bari. Thousands of pilgrims come to the Basilica of San Nicola in Bari, Puglia, to worship at the saint's tomb and to ask for his help. There is a procession on this day in which a group of Barese sailors take the saint's image down to the water, where it is placed on a flower-decked boat and taken out to sea. At night the statue is returned to its place of honor on the altar of San Nicola's crypt.

Massive Dead Zones Threaten Atlantic Sea Life

Dead zones in the Atlantic—so called because their lack of oxygen can't sustain life—have been seen for the first time by scientists. These areas of extremely low oxygen occurred in the tropical North Atlantic. The levels of oxygen were the lowest ever recornded in the open Atlantic. And while some microorganisms can live in these zones, most see life can't, which could leard to massive fish kills, scientists warned.

If You Were Born Today, May 7

You are an earthy yet artistic person with a strong appreciation of nature, music, and the arts. You are charming and personable in a quiet way, and also very loving, although you easily withhold your concern and care if you feel someone is not giving you the proper respect. Moodiness and indecisiveness are strong possibilities with this birthday, as are great talents and sensitivity. Famous people born today: Robert Browning, Tchaikovsky, Johannes Brahms, Gary Cooper, Traci Lords.

This species of cormorant, first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1761, lives along the rocky coasts of western and southern Europe, southwest Asia, and north Africa. These birds eat a wide variety of fish, diving to depths of 45 m (148 ft) to find their prey

Scissor Grip Covers

one sheepish girl
This always happens. When I am trying to focus on one craft project, another idea pops into my head! Last night, I was working on an upcoming crochet project when I lost focus, wondering if I could somehow add a little something to my favorite pair of scissors. I started crocheting over one of the grips and…voila! A moment of distraction turned into a cozy grip cover. Here is how I did it if you want to spruce up your own scissors…
Materials:
- Scissors
- A G6/4.00mm crochet hook
- Cotton yarn (I used Rowan Handknit Cotton)
- Tapestry needle
1. Create a slip knot on your crochet hook and leave a long tail for weaving.
2. Bring the hook under the scissor opening, pull the yarn up through the opening, wrap the yarn around the hook, and pull through. Continue with single crochet until the grip is covered.
3. Pull the yarn through the last loop and bind off.
4. Now that you have two long ends on each side of the grip cover, use the tapestry needle to weave in the ends. Cut off the excess yarn.
5. Repeat these steps for the second grip.
The crochet covers make the scissors much softer to grip when I am snipping away excess yarn and thread. Also, the bright colors will help my scissors stand out in the bottomless pit that is my notions bag.

RECIPE
Shepherd’s Pie – Vegan Version!
Sheppherd Pie

1 T. extra-virgin olive oil
5 cloves garlic, minced
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
2 c. crushed tomatoes
1/4 t. salt
1/8 t. black pepper
1 tin black beans
1 tin chick peas
1 tin lentils
3 c. mashed potatoes
1/4 t. paprika
2 T. vegetable ghee
Heat the oil, then add 2 of the cloves of garlic and saute for 1 minutes. Add the pepper and saute for 4 minutes, then add 3/4 c. of the tomatoes and the salt. Cook uncovered for 3 minutes.
Meanwhile, in a bowl, mash the beans with the remaining garlic and tomatoes – but don’t puree them – then pour into an oiled casserole dish. Top with the mixture from the skillet, then spoon the mashed potatoes on top. Dot with ghee to taste, and sprinkle with paprika. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes.
Notes: You can jazz things up by adding some roasted garlic or fresh rosemary to the mashed potatoes, or heat things up by adding some of my exciting chili powder (start with 1 t.) or simply using hot paprika, if you like it a little milder. Hey! Don’t let me stop you from being creative! But really, this dish is worth the effort. And if, like me, you live alone, this will make some wonderful hot single lunches or dinners to store in the freezer.

Sundried Tomatoes and Feta Tri-Tip CrockPot Recipe

Guess what? This tasted amazing. It was wonderful--full of flavor, and the meat held it's shape and form through the slow cooking. This is a company-worthy, in-law-worthy, queen of England-worthy crockpot meal. And it took all of 6 seconds to prepare.

The Ingredients.

--2 lbs of tri-tip
--1/3 cup of white wine
--1 jar of sundried tomatoes, oil drained
--8.5 oz package of feta cheese

The Directions.

I put the meat in frozen. Drain the tomatoes, and pour on top of the meat. Crumble the entire package of feta on top of the meat and tomatoes and around the side of the meat hunk. Add the 1/3 cup of wine.
Cook on low for 6-10 hours, depending on the thickness and cut of the meat you are using and whether or not it's frozen.
I cooked our tri-tip for 6 hours, and it held it's shape and needed to be cut with a knife.

The Verdict.

Excellent meal. We all enjoyed every bit of it. My kids love feta, and are happy whenever it's on their plate. We had ate this out in the yard with a big green salad.

Rock Candy {Tutorial}

happiness is homemade

Rock candy is always a fun favorite of children, and it’s a fantastic way to disguise a Summer science lesson as a sugary treat! All it takes is a few simple tools, lots of sugar and even more patience!
Rock candy ingredients & supplies: Wooden skewers (cut in half), water, sugar, clothespins and glass jars/drinking glasses. The amount of water and sugar you need depends on how many pieces of rock candy you would like to make and the number of jars you have available (I recommend no more than 2 pieces per jar) – the standard ratio is 2 cups of sugar to 1 cup of water, but we found that we had to add a bit more sugar than our recipe called for. In the end, we used 10 cups of sugar to 4 cups of water.
To make our batch of rock candy, we started with 4 cups of water and 4 cups of sugar. Put it all into a large saucepan, because once you put it on the stove it will expand while boiling. I let Sutton mix up the first bit of sugar before putting it on the stove. He was fascinated with watching the sugar dissolve, and it was especially interesting for him to see that we could dissolve even more sugar with the addition of the heat from the stove. Once your pot is on the stove, bring it to a low boil over medium heat, and continue to add sugar one cup at a time until you can no longer dissolve any more of it (making a completely saturated sugar solution).
Turn off the heat and allow it to cool for 15 minutes.
While your sugar is cooling you can prep your sticks. Soak them in water and roll them in a coating of sugar to give the new sugar crystals something to “seed” to. Be sure to let them dry all the way! If they are still too wet when you put them into the hot sugar solution, all of the sugar coating will fall off, and the new crystals will have nothing to grow on.
CAREFULLY pour your sugar solution into your glass jars. If you’d like to add food coloring or flavoring to your rock candy, now is the time to do so. We added color, but we kept the flavor all natural (what kiddo doesn't like the taste of plain sugar?).

Slowly insert your sugared skewers into the solution. You can use a clothespin as shown to keep your sticks in place. Smaller mouth jars/glasses work best, but only allow room for about two sticks per jar. Be sure that your sticks are not touching the sides or bottom of the glass or each other! They need room for the new crystals to grow!

Set them up in a warm, sunny location where they won’t be disturbed, and wait…

…and wait…and wait…and wait (still with me?)…and wait some more…

After about a week you will have made yourself a batch of sparkling sugar rock candy!

Yummy!

So pretty, so tasty and sooooo worth the wait!

When a Girl is Born
By Sumitra
While a vast majority of Indians continue to prefer sons, a small village in the Indian state of Rajasthan has its own unique tradition of celebrating their daughters. Since 2006, the residents of Piplantri village, in southern Rajasthan’s Rajsamand district, have been planting a whopping 111 trees to celebrate the birth of a girl!
Given that an average of 60 girls are born each year, the villagers have managed to plant over 250,000 trees so far – including varieties like Neem, Indian Rosewood, and Mango. The community of 8,000 residents is also dedicated to making sure that the trees survive and attain fruition as the girls grow up.
