Fresh Veggies Day JUNE 16, 2015

DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Fresh Veggies Day

Five portions a day? Seven? Ten? Nutritionists agree that when it comes to fresh fruit and vegetables, most of us just aren’t getting enough. Make a change on Fresh Veggies Day, and invite family and neighbors around for a fun and surprising meat-free feast.
Originally, Fresh Veggies Day was celebrated in early summer, when the tastiest new-season vegetables start to become plentiful. With one eye on the weather, take a trip to your local farmers’ market or specialist food store and stock up on whatever is ripe – along with some free recipe ideas. For some early crops, you may even be able to go to a farm and pick your own: why not get some friends together and plan a day out?
Of course, most gardeners will tell you that nothing beats the pride, satisfaction and taste of home-grown veg. Seed clubs and gardening forums make it easy, and affordable, to cultivate your own weird and wonderful varieties.

History

Geronimo (1829)

When US authorities abolished the Chiricahua Reservation in 1876 and removed the Apaches to an arid region of New Mexico, Geronimo led a group of followers to Mexico. He was soon captured and returned to the new reservation, but escaped again with a group in 1881 and began leading them on raids. The cycle repeated again and again, until late in 1886, when Geronimo and the remainder of his forces surrendered for good.

Technically, it's breast tissue but it develops in a lab culture the same way it would in a teen hitting puberty. And it could help scientists to better understand how the breast develops and what happens when things go awry in breast cancer.

Your imagination is boundless and you are a true visionary. You possess an endearing youthful quality throughout life, and can be quite persuasive when you want to be. You are given to daydreaming and require frequent periods of rest and solitude in order to renew your spirit. You do thrive on sharing your ideas with others, but you need time alone to refresh. You can be quite ambitious, and at times critical and impatient when feeling restless or unfocused. Famous people born today: Erich Segal, Tupac Shakur, Ian Buchanan, Wally Joyner, Joyce Carol Oates.

CROCKPOT RECIPE .. father's day idea!

CrockPot Jalapeño Poppers Recipe

If you are looking to make dad some awesome manly meat, I suggest you make him these yummy jalapeño poppers. Because they have cheese and bacon in them, and everyone knows that the way to a man's heart is through cheese and bacon. And since they aren't breaded and deep-fried you can kind of sort of pass them off as health food............................sort of.

The Ingredients.

--10 jalapeños
--1/2 block cream cheese
--1/4 cup sour cream
--1/3 cup shredded parmesan cheese
--9 pieces of crumbled bacon (I used turkey, but go ahead and use PORK!)
--1/3 cup water

The Directions.

I used a round 4 qt Crock-Pot for this dish. Okay. I have never before cut up jalapeños.The food tv people say to use gloves when cutting up jalapeños. LISTEN TO THEM. I was in pain, PAIN, for about 3 hours in all of my fingers. I took Aleve and sat with an icepack for quite a while, I was so very bothered by the juice. Be aware.

I actually just shuddered typing this out, remembering the sting. Please be careful.

Anyhow, wearing gloves, cut the tops off of the jalapeños, and scrape out the membrane and all of the little white seeds with a knife under running water.

In a bowl, mix together your stuffing mixture of cream cheese, parmesan cheese, sour cream, and crumbled bacon.

Fill the empty jalapeño cavities with the stuffing. I used my fingers. You could probably be fancy and pipe it in with a plastic bag, but the fingers worked.

Put the 1/3 cup of water at the bottom of your crockpot, and lay the stuffed jalapenos on top.

Cover and cook on high for 2-3 hours, or on low for 3-4. They are done when the skin of the jalapenos start to wilt and look wrinkly.

Serve hot or at room temperature. I like them best at room temperature.

The Verdict.

These are delicious, and aren't overly spicy---the heat was just right for me. I made them for my brother and his wife, but didn't think to make them until right before we ate dinner. So we had them after dinner and dessert, which is a bit weird. I was too full to enjoy them that night, but adored the leftovers.which I ate for breakfast.
with coffee.because I'm a total weird-o.

Canadian Scientist Uses Small Iron Fish to Save Lives in Cambodia

By Sumitra
When Canadian scientist Christopher Charles discovered six years ago how badly Cambodians were suffering from anemia, he decided to try and solve the problem. Unfortunately, tried-and-tested methods such as iron supplements and iron-rich diets didn’t work because they weren’t affordable. So he came up with the novel idea of using a small iron fish as a cooking ingredient!
The people Charles was working with were the poorest of the poor, and couldn’t afford red meat or expensive iron pills. The women couldn’t even switch to iron pots because they were too heavy and costly. “Some nights I wondered what I had got myself into; here I was in a village with no running water, no electricity and no way to use my computer — it was like a (research) baptism by fire,” Charles recalled.
But inspiration struck eventually, and he decided that the best way cure anemia was to literally add iron to the food. “We knew some random piece of ugly metal wouldn’t work . . . so we had to come up with an attractive idea,” Charles said. Along with his research team, he came up with small, circular chunk of iron, but the women were hesitant to add it to their pots. They changed the prototype to a lotus shape, but the women didn’t like that either. So Charles dug deeper into Cambodian history and culture, and decided upon a piece of iron shaped like a fish – a symbol of good luck in Cambodia. And it worked! Women were more than happy to add it to their cooking pots and follow Charles’ instructions.
