History

Amedeo Avogadro (1776)

In 1811, Avogadro, an Italian physicist, advanced the hypothesis that equal volumes of gases under identical conditions of pressure and temperature contain the same number of molecules. Now one of the fundamental concepts of the atomic theory of matter, his theory has become known as Avogadro's law. Since then, physicists have determined the number of molecules in the gram-molecular weight and found that it is the same for all gases.

Hora at Prislop

The Hora is a dancing festival held at Mount Prislop at the Transylvania-Moldaviaborder in Romania. The dancers of the hora carry big rings that symbolize the friendship of the people of the regions of Moldavia, Maramures, and Transylvania. The top artistic groups gather at Prislop Pass to present a parade in colorful folk costumes and then a program of songs and dances, ending with the lively peasant horas. Typical food dishes of the area are served and folk art is on display.

What You Think of as "Yellow" Changes with Seasons, Say Scientists

To many of us, the color yellow looks slightly different now than it did six months ago, even if we don't realize it.That's because our vision changes with the seasons, new research from the University of York says. In the winter, when we see more shades of grey in nature, we perceive colors differently than we do in the summer, when green abounds.

DAILY SQU-EEK

If You Were Born Today, August 9

Although your personality is restless, you are at your best when meeting your responsibilities and filling commitments. Self-esteem plummets otherwise. You are hard working, likeable, dependable, and achievement-oriented. Some of you are overachievers. You might often find yourself in the position of managing and taking care of others. You have a very responsible streak and might stay in difficult situations longer than most as a result - watch for over-committing yourself. Because pride and protectiveness can keep you from sharing your worries and concerns with people closest to you, it can be very important for you to find a confidante so that you can share some of your burdens. Making more time for pleasure is also essential to your success. In close relationships, control or imbalance can be issues, but relationships can get much better later in life. You are deeply loving and have strong personal magnetism. Famous people born today: Whitney Houston, Gillian Anderson, Melanie Griffith, Audrey Tautou, Anna Kendrick, Eric Bana, Sam Elliott.

A Night at Deadvlei

“The night before returning to Windhoek, we spent several hours at Deadvlei,” writes Beth McCarley, who was photographing in Namibia. “The moon was bright enough to illuminate the sand dunes in the distance, but the skies were still dark enough to clearly see the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds. Deadvlei means 'dead marsh.' The camelthorn trees are believed to be about 900 years old but have not decomposed because the environment is so dry.”

CROCKPOT RECIPE
stephanie o'dea

CrockPot Chicken Cordon Bleu

This sounds fancy. It is. But it is also incredibly easy and fast to assemble. You should make it. Right now.

The Ingredients.

--4 chicken breast halves, pounded thin
--4-8 slices of ham
--4-8 slices of swiss cheese
--can of your favorite cream-of-something soup
--2 T low fat milk

UNLESS you're a crazy California hippie like me. Then you can use instead:

--1 T butter
--3 T flour
--1/2 cup low-fat milk (soy in our case)
--1/2 cup chicken broth
--1/4 t salt
--1/4 t black pepper

The Directions.

I used a 6qt oval Smart-Pot for this recipe. A 4qt would have been better. My crock wasn't full enough. If you only have a large, consider upping to 6 breast halves--(psst. if you do up it, you don't really need another can of soup. Unless you do 8 halves. Then you should use another).

Spray crockpot with cooking spray.

Pound chicken breasts flat (put them in a ziplock before you pound so chicken juice doesn't spray all over the kitchen grossing you out, and necessitate a call to the local Hazmat team).

Put a slice of the ham and a slice of the swiss cheese on the chicken breast and roll it up. Put it into the crockpot, seam side down. If desired, top with another piece of ham and cheese. Continue with the other pieces. It's okay to stagger-stack the chicken. It will still cook nicely for you.

If you are making your own "special soup," make a roux on the stove top with the butter and flour, and whisk in the broth, milk, and spices. Pour on top of the chicken.

or! open can of cream-of soup. Pour into crockpot. Put the 2T of low fat milk into your empty can and swirl it around to get the remaining stuck on good stuff. Pour that in, too.

Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours, or on high for 4-5. This is done when the chicken is cooked through and has begun to brown on top. I took ours out for exactly 4 hours on high. It was cooked through, but could have stayed in longer to gain some color.

The Verdict.

This is very good. I liked that it wasn't breaded---I've ordered Cordon Bleu in restaurants before and the breading on it reminded me of a frozen chicken patty and it grossed me out. This was tender and quite flavorful. Adam is excited to take leftovers for lunch.

Game of Drones – Australia’s Awesome Underground Drone Racing League

By Sumitra Drone racing is a mushrooming trend in Australia, catering to a growing band of enthusiasts looking to fulfill their need for speed. The races, organised by underground ‘leagues’, generally take place in rundown warehouses, farms, and go-kart tracks in the fringe suburbs of various cities.
The relatively unknown sport is called FPV (first person racing). Participants spend countless hours custom building their quadcopters, fitting them with onboard cameras and ‘blinging’ them up with LED lights. During the actual events, racers don special goggles – sometimes held together with gaffer tape – to give them a drone’s-eye view as they steer their machines around the course. So it’s a lot like video gaming, except players get to control a real device instead of a virtual one.
“It’s addictive. It’s like playing a video game,” says drone racer Darren French, who has clocked over 60 kmph. “It’s fast. The more you do it, the more you want to fly.”
