History

Roy Rogers (1911)

A former fruit picker and cowboy, the guitar-strumming Rogers—born Leonard Franklin Slye—began his musical career in the 1930s as a radio performer. He later founded the Sons of the Pioneers, a singing trio that began appearing in movies in 1935, and soon succeeded Gene Autry as America's favorite singing cowboy in movies of the mid-1940s. Rogers appeared in dozens of B movies with his wife, Dale Evans, and his famous horse, Trigger.

Día del Puno

Each year a festival takes place in Puno, Peru, during the first week in November to mark the legendary birth of the first Inca ruler, Manco Capac, and his wife, Mama Ocllo. On November 5, the date associated with their birth, a parade of reed boats, called balsas, accompanies an elaborately decorated boat that takes a couple playing the roles of Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo to an island in the lake. There, the birth is dramatically reenacted. Festivities include performances by traditional dance and musical groups, sporting events, exhibits, and a crafts fair

Some carnivorous dinosaurs, such as the Tyrannosaurus rex, could open their jaws as wide as 90 degrees, say researchers from the University of Bristol who examined feeding styles and dietary preferences of dinosaurs.

DAILY SQU-EEK

If You Were Born Today, November 5

You possess a rare balance between introspection and extroversion. You are able to look within for answers, and often do, yet reaching out to others and making social connections also comes fairly easily to you. You are quietly ambitious, and a strong sense that you will achieve can carry you far. You have an aptitude for the written word and/or you are able to charm others through your words. You are more adaptable than most Scorpios, yet you are determined in whatever ignites your passions. You perhaps appear to be more versatile than you actually are. You possess your own unique vision, and you are not a conformist. Driven by a quiet sense of a personal mission, if you follow your intuition, success is almost guaranteed. The Kid
The Kid is a 1921 American silent comedy-drama film starring Charlie Chaplin and Jackie Coogan. This was Chaplin's first full-length film as a director; he also wrote and produced the film, which follows a young boy who is abandoned by his mother and raised by The Tramp. It was the second-highest grossing film in 1921. Innovative in its combination of comedic and dramatic elements, The Kid has been considered one of the greatest films of the silent era.

Shifting Light

Photograph by Hamed Tabein, National Geographic
Hamed Tabein made an early morning trek to the desert, just east of Esfahan in Iran, to capture this shot of the smoothed sand and a hardy little stand of trees that has managed to grow in a hollow between sand dunes. “[This photo was taken at around 7 a.m.,” Tabein says. “It's an extraordinary place for landscape photography. I went there before sunrise, and as the sun came up I started [photographing] because of the best light and sand texture ... Two hours after sunrise you cannot see anything except the sand, without any texture and contrast. It would be just a washed-out picture.”

Barack Obama's Chili Recipe--in the CrockPot

I've made two chili recipes already this year, but when I read Kalyn'sp ost listing the ingredients for the Obama family chili, I was intrigued. Cumin? Turmeric? In chili? This I had to make. The result is a mild and pleasant chili, suitable for all ages. The kids gladly ate this, and not once complained about spice---a complaint that is quite common at our dinner table. Adam and I added a few drops of Tabasco sauce to our bowls.

The Ingredients.

--1 can kidney beans (and the goop!)
--1 lb lean ground meat (I used ground chicken)
--1 green bell pepper, chopped
--1 large onion, chopped
--5-6 medium tomatoes, chopped (include seeds and all)
--4 chopped cloves of garlic
--1 tsp cumin
--1 tsp oregano
--1 tsp basil
--1 tsp turmeric
--2 tsp chili powder (I started with 1, but added another after a few hours. Do what's right for your family)
--1 tsp salt
--3 T red wine vinegar

The Directions.

I used a 6 quart Smart Pot for Obama's chili.

I made the executive decision to increase all of the spices from the original recipe, because in CrockPot cooking, the slow simmer of the ingredients cooking can overpower added spices. I'm glad that I upped everything---the flavors were there, but they were subtle and not overpowering.

I gave myself a pat on the back.

I also decided to not brown the meat on the stove top. I hate browning meat, and since the chicken I used was quite lean, I just crumbled it in raw. If you are going to use beef, or enjoy browning meat, go for it.

Chop up the tomatoes, garlic, onion, and bell pepper. Add to the crockpot. Open the can of beans, and pour in the whole thing. Add the ground meat. Stir in all of the spices and the red wine vinegar.

Cover and cook on low for 7-9 hours, or on high for 4-5. I cooked our chili on low for 9 hours.

Season with a bit more salt, to taste.

Obama serves his chili over rice, so we did too. The kids really liked that a lot----they love white rice.

The Verdict.

Very tasty! It does not pack a punch the way traditional chili does, which was a pleasant change. I loved the addition of cumin and turmeric---I am new to turmeric, and like how it turns things orange. We're going to have the leftovers as taco filling.

Carmen Miranda Before She Hit The Bigtime

We all know Carmen Miranda as the famously exotic lady in the tutti-frutti hat, complete with stacked platform shoes and fabulously ruffled costumes, but she didn’t always have this colorful image. Back in the 1930s she was a lot more understated and looked completely different, take a look, you’ll be surprised!
If you’re not sure what she looked like in her heyday, there’s a great picture of her at the bottom with Abbot and Costello…
