History

Pieter Cornelis "Piet" Mondrian (1872)

Mondrian was a Dutch painter whose work foreshadowed the rise of abstract art in the 1940s and 1950s. He went to Paris in 1910 where he developed his geometric, nonobjective style, which he called neoplasticism. It is characterized by the elimination of sensuality from artwork and the restriction of pictorial language to its most basic elements—the straight line, primary colors, and the neutrals of black, white, and gray.

Magellan Day

The island of Guam, largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean, about 3,000 miles west of Hawaii, was found on this date in 1521 by the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan. The island was formally claimed by Spain in 1565 and was later ceded to the US as a prize at the end of the Spanish-American War. Today, Guam is the site of major US military installations. Guamanians celebrate their island's founding with an official holiday on the first Monday in March with fiestas and sailboating. This day is also known as Discovery Day.

DAILY SQU-EEK

If You Were Born Today, March 7

You are a true artist at heart, with an unusual perspective on life. You rarely feel understood, although this may be because you keep a veil of mystery about you. You need to feel connected to something higher than yourself, to understand the meaning of your existence, and to make a solid contribution to the world. You may find that you're often longing or yearning for something more. Your imagination is tremendous, and you can be a fanciful story teller.Famous people born today: Denyce Graves, Willard Scott, Mary Teresa Norton, John Heard, Rachel Weisz, Bryan Cranston, Matthew Vaughn.

Mont Blanc (White Mountain) in the Alps is western Europe’s highest peak at 15,771 feet (4,800 meters). Arina Andryeyeva submitted this shot, captured at 13,120 feet (4,000 meters), of Mont Blanc’s snowy ridge and peak ascending into the cloud cover. “The temperature before climbing was around 20°C [68°F],” Andryeyeva writes. “After [we made] it almost to the very top, the temperature dropped to minus 1°C [30°F].”
