World Kidney Day March 10, 2016

DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate World Kidney Day

Created in 2006 as a joint initiative between the International Society of Nephrology and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations, World Kidney Day is designed as a health awareness campaign. At present, the date is observed in close to 100 countries around the world.
World Kidney Day aims to raise awareness of kidney-related diseases and of the overall importance of our kidneys to our health. It also tries to highlight preventative measures, in an attempt to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and related health problems, on a global scale.
If it is detected early enough, Chronic Kidney Disease is treatable. However, CKD is becoming increasingly prevalent around the world. In addition to educating the public, World Kidney Day is designed to teach or remind medical professionals of the important role they can play in detecting problems and aims to encourage more systematic screening of patients with diabetes.

History

Pink Floyd Releases Dark Side of the Moon (1973)


Dark Side of the Moon is a concept album by the rock group Pink Floyd that explores the nature of the human experience through themes such as money, war, mental illness, and death. It is considered by many fans to be the band's magnum opus. It is one of the best-selling albums of all time—it is estimated that one in every 14 people in the US under the age of 50 owns or owned a copy of this album. 

Motorcycle Week


Bike Week is the largest motorcycle meet in the world, held for 10 days in Daytona Beach, Florida. The highlight of the week is the Daytona 200 race, which attracts competitors from all over the world. Other races include a three-hour US Endurance Championship race and vintage motorcycle races on Classics Day. These events take place in the Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium and on the Daytona International Speedway. Another popular feature of the week is a parade of over 5,000 motorcycles, and concerts and trade shows are held throughout the week.

Seven miles below the surface of the sea, the Challenger Deep is the deepest spot in the Mariana Trench and thus on Earth. The only light is that produced by animals that use photoluminescence; no sunlight can penetrate even close to these waters.

Kuwait Towers
The Kuwait Towers are a group of three slender towers in Kuwait City, standing on a promontory into the Persian Gulf. Built as part of a water distribution project, they were officially inaugurated in March 1979. Today they are rated as a landmark and symbol of modern Kuwait. The largest tower holds 4,500 cubic metres of water, a restaurant, a café, a lounge and a reception hall. The towers have been closed since March 2012 for maintenance.

The Ingredients
serves 6

12 boneless, skinless chicken thighs, or 6 boneless, skinless breast halves
1 cup brown sugar (it's okay. you can brush your teeth after.)
1/4 cup lemon-lime soda (stay with me...)
2/3 cup vinegar (I used white wine, but think regular white would be fine)
3 cloves smashed and chopped garlic
2 tablespoons soy sauce (La Choy and Tamari wheat free are gluten free)
1 teaspoon ground black pepper

The Directions.

Use a 4 quart crockpot for this recipe. 

Plop the chicken into your crockpot. Cover with the brown sugar, pepper, chopped garlic, and soy sauce. Add the vinegar, and pour in the soda. It will bubble!

Cover and cook on low for 6-9 hours, or on high for 4-5. The chicken is done when it is cooked through and has reached desired consistency. The longer you cook it, the more tender it will be.

Serve over a bowl of white rice with a ladle full of the broth.

    in the early to mid 50's, mom and I would go to the feed store in Winchester, NH, with my dad to select the bags of chicken feed we wanted for the fabric. I still have a top I refashioned from one of her feed sack skirts. I made and wore the cotton top specifically for our two month trip to Israel in '74.
