Definition:(noun) A medical dressing consisting of a soft heated mass of meal or clay that is spread on a cloth and applied to the skin to treat inflamed areas or improve circulation etc.
Synonyms:poultice, plaster
Usage:In an effort to reduce the inflammation, they wrapped the horse's leg in a cataplasm made of leaves.

History

Joseph Bonaparte Named King of Spain (1808)


The elder brother of Napoleon, Joseph Bonaparte served as king of Naples during Napoleon's reign, abolishing feudalism and reorganizing the judicial, financial, and educational systems. He was named king of Spain in 1808, but his reforms there were less successful, and he abdicated in 1813 and returned to France. After Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, Joseph lived in the US and later in Italy.

Diego Velázquez (1599)


The most celebrated painter of the Spanish school, Velázquez was one of the outstanding artists of the 17th century. His early works were mostly religious or genre scenes. After arriving in Madrid in 1623, he painted a portrait of King Philip IV that won him immediate success and an appointment as court painter. Notable among his portraits is his masterpiece, Las Meninas—The Maids of Honor. 

Swedish Flag Day


Constitution and Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the Swedish constitution on June 6, 1809, and the ascension of Gustavus I to the throne on June 6, 1523. It is observed throughout Sweden with patriotic meetings, parades, and the raising of flags. In Stockholm, the main celebration takes place at the Stadium, where the Swedish national anthem is sung by a chorus of several thousand voices, and the King awards flags to various schools, sports clubs, and other organizations. In the evening, the celebration continues at Skansen, the oldest open-air museum in Europe. 

King Tut's Dagger Made of Iron from a Meteorite


A dagger buried alongside King Tutankhamun was made with iron from a meteorite, according to research published in the journal Meteoritics & Planetary Science.

Hammer projection
The Hammer projection is a map projection described by Ernst Hammer in 1892. It uses the same 2:1 elliptical outer shape as the Mollweide projection. Both projections are equal-area, but by depicting parallels of latitude as curved lines rather than straight, Hammer reduced distortion toward the outer limbs, where it is extreme in the Mollweide.
