Say Something Nice Day June 1, 2016

DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Say Something Nice Day

Say Something Nice Day began in Charleston, South Carolina, when the Mayors of North Charleston and Charleston came together with members of the Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery and the South Carolina Baptist Convention to create a day to be kind to the special people in our lives, like our children. It’s also a day to remember and celebrate people, who provide us with a variety of services, such as bus drivers, healthcare workers and teachers. And, it’s a great opportunity to apologize to people that we might have wronged or hurt through our behavior. The aim of this special day is to fight against unkindness, bullying and the lack of politeness that dominates society today. The creators hope that this one day of pleasantness will grow, until people are nice to each other everyday.
Set an example and encourage your children to be nice to each other on this day.

DAILY SQU-EEK

If You Were Born Today, June 1
You are a true artist at heart. You see the world around you in a unique way, which endears you to others. You are thoughtful and curious. At times moody and at other times inspired, you can also vacillate between great practicality and idealism. You might find that following the dictates of your head, which is often your choice, gets you into more trouble than following your heart. Trusting your intuition is the challenge. Famous people born today: Marilyn Monroe, Morgan Freeman, Heidi Klum, Andy Griffith, Pat Boone, Ron Wood.

Three Beauties of the Present Day
Three Beauties of the Present Day is anishiki-e color woodblock print from c. 1792–93 by Japanese ukiyo-e artist Kitagawa Utamaro. The triangular composition depicts the busts of three celebrity beauties of the time: geisha Tomimoto Toyohina, and teahouse waitresses Naniwa Kita and Takashima Hisa. Each figure in the work is adorned with an identifying family crest. The portraits are idealized, and though at first glance their faces seem similar, subtle differences in their features and expressions can be detected. The luxurious print, made with multiple woodblocks, was published by Tsutaya Jūzaburō and is believed to have been quite popular.

Using an underwater snoot, Davide Lopresti made this bright photo of a sea horse. These delicate creatures live in shallow tropical and temperate waters around the world, and they use their elongated snouts to suck in their dinner: the plankton and tiny crustaceans that drift by them.

Sweet Potato Chili (vegan!) Slow Cooker Recipe

ayearofslowcooking

This is a cheap, vegan meal that doesn't leave you hungry 15 minutes later. I promise.

The Ingredients.

2 sweet potatoes, peeled and in 2-inch chunks
1 yellow onion, diced
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 (15-ounce) can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed (or 2/3 cup dried beans, soaked overnight and boiled briskly for 10 minutes (because of the freaky red bean toxin thing)
1 red bell pepper, seeded and chopped
1 (14.5-ounce) can tomatoes (whatever's on sale, mine had oregano and roasted garlic)
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon chipotle chili powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 cup water
1/2 cup orange juice (not pictured. If you don't have any in the house, use water)

The Directions.

Use a 5-6 quart slow cooker. This is enough food to feed a family of 4 regular-sized, or 6 smallish people. Peel and chunk the sweet potato and add to the pot. Add diced onion. Follow with the red bell pepper, can of tomatoes, the beans, garlic, and seasonings. Pour in OJ and water. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours, or until the onion is translucent and the sweet potato is fork-tender (if you want the sweet potato to get really squishy and disappear when stirred, cook longer).

The Verdict.

Super tasty. I loved the sweet smoky flavor this had, and was thrilled at the depth of flavor that came from this spice combination. The sweet potato and beans were plenty filling, and Adam didn't once mumble that he'd really like a steak. My kids ate it, but un-veganized it by adding shredded cheese and sour cream.
I will definitely make this again.

CARDBOARD ROLL CAT FAMILY
Cardboard Roll Crafts - Cat Family Play Set!

To make a cardboard roll cat family play set, you will need:

Cardboard Roll Crafts -- Cat Family Pay Set!

Cut the Cardboard Roll

Begin by cutting each cardboard roll in to sections. I like to vary the heights on these to make a Mama Cat, Papa Cat, and some kittens.

Shape It Up

Smooch the top of each cardboard roll section to form the cat ears.

Paint it Up

Cover each cardboard roll section with a layer of paint and allow it to dry completely.

Decorate!

Use glue stick to attach a piece of contrasting scrapbook paper for the belly of each cat. Use a black marker to draw eyes, a nose, mouth, and whiskers. So cute!!
