DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Croissant Day

The legend of how the croissant came to be is that in 1683, the Turkish Empire laid siege on Vienna, Austria. The Turks made several attempts to conquer the city by force, but were unsuccessful, so decided to try underground tunnels. The bakers of Vienna, who worked in the basement storerooms, heard the sound of digging and alerted the cities army. For their vigilance, the bakers received high honors and thanks for their assistance in outwitting the Turks. In celebration, they baked their bread in the shape of a crescent moon—the symbol of the Ottoman Empire. After the Turks were defeated, it became custom to serve morning coffee with the crescent-shaped pastry! The legend continues to say that over a hundred years later, Marie Antoinette introduced the pastry to the French who dubbed it a “croissant”. Celebrate Croissant Day in style by eating an abundance of this tasty treat!

Yup, some people can’t handle the truth!   My Favorite Animal Our teacher asked what my favorite animal was, and I said, "Fried chicken." She said I wasn't funny, but she couldn't have been right, because everyone else laughed. My parents told me to always tell the truth. I did. Fried chicken is my favorite animal.  I told my dad what happened and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals very much. I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef. Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal's office.

I told him what happened, and he laughed, too. Then he told me not to do it again. The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was.  I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the principal's office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again. I don't understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn’t like it when I am. Today, my teacher asked me to tell her what famous military person I admired most.  I told her, "Colonel Sanders." Guess where the hell I am now…

Shirley Hazzard (1931)

Hazzard is an Australian novelist and short-story writer who has lived in the US since 1951. She and her husband, writer Francis Steegmuller, were both frequent contributors to The New Yorker magazine. Noted for her lyrical style, she achieved early success with her first story collection, Cliffs of Fall. Her 1980 novel, The Transit of Venus, brought her literary acclaim and a greatly expanded readership. Hazzard did not publish her next novel until 2003.

VALENTINE HEART POP UP CARD

Step 1:
Click on the link to download the .pdf template for the pop-up Valentine Heart:

Step 2:
Print out both pages from the template onto heavy paper, such as card stock or construction paper.

Step 3: Using a ruler as a guide, take the rounded end of a paper clip (or a ball point pen that has run out of ink) and press along the dotted lines of the heart print-out.

Step 4: Cut the heart print-out from the sheet by carefully following the solid, black lines around the edges...

Step 5: ...until the pop-up piece is removed.

Step 6: Flip the pop-up piece OVER so the dotted lines are not visible.

Step 7: Lay the pop-up piece on a flat surface and take hold of the right side.

Step 8: Carefully fold the entire right side over onto the left side and crease it flat.

Step 9: Take hold of the smaller heart at the left...

Step 10: ...and carefully fold it all the way over to the right, creasing it flat.

Step 11: Flip the entire pop-up piece over. Take hold of the smaller heart at the right...

Step 12: And fold it all the way over to the left, creasing it flat.

Step 13: When you open the pop-up piece it looks like this. COLOR your pop-up with colored pencils or crayons. Set the pop-up piece aside.

Step 14: Using a ruler as a guide, take the rounded end of a paper clip (or a ball point pen that has run out of ink) and press along the dotted line running down the center of the card print-out.

Step 15: Cut the card from the sheet by carefully following the solid, black lines around the edges.

Step 16: Fold the card in half along the dotted lines to crease it, then open it again.

Step 17: Apply white glue to each heart printed on the left and right sides of the card.

Step 18: Place the two smaller hearts of the pop-up piece over the glue areas on the card and carefully press down letting the glue dry.

Step 19: After the glue has dried carefully close the card.

Step 20: Your pop-up Valentine is finished! Now give it to that special someone!
