Seed Swap Day January 28, 2017

DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Seed Swap Day
Related image
All budding gardeners out there, who enjoy growing new plants, will enjoy Seed Swap Day. Although people have been swapping seeds since time began, nowadays people usually buy seeds and the old skill of swapping seeds is disappearing from our culture. The first official seed swap day was held on 26th January 2006, in Washington DC, and is now a national ‘day’. It’s a day where gardeners can come together and swap the seeds from their best plants, which is great for improving the biodiversity, in the local area.
Why not have a seed day party with friends and neighbors; or your local allotment group, if you own an allotment? Everyone must bring some of their own seeds to swap, so try breaking away from the usual, and swap yours with an heirloom variety instead. Everyone attending the event could bring something to share, how about something made from their own produce?!

Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice while living at "Steventon," her father's Hampshire vicarage where she spent the first 25 years of her life. However, the book was not published until much later—in 1813, four years before her death. Like Austen's other novels, Pride and Prejudice is a comedy of manners that depicts the self-contained world of provincial ladies and gentlemen. In 2003, the novel placed second in a BBC poll for the "UK's Best-Loved Book."

He debuted in 1900 and performed with moderate success until the 1930s, when he stopped performing for five years to improve his technique and reemerged as a giant of 20th-century music, active into his 80s. In the US, he was equally noted as soloist and chamber musician. His repertoire ranged from Bach to 20th-century Spanish composers.

The Lunar New Year is the most important and the longest of all Chinese festivals, celebrated by Chinese communities throughout the world. The eve of the new year is the high point of the festival when family members return home to honor their ancestors and enjoy a great feast. On the first day of the new year, household doors are thrown open to let good luck enter. Dragon and lion dances are performed, and there are acrobatic demonstrations and much beating of gongs. An ancient custom is giving little red packets of money called hung-pao or lai see to children.

If You Were Born Today, January 28

You are highly idealistic and a bit of a perfectionist. You have excellent instincts and generally can size up a person or a situation quickly and quite accurately. While gentle and considerate overall, you do have a dominant or "rule the roost" side, and you can be quite stubborn. You are also very patient and strategic when you need to be, but you have little patience for close-minded people. You are clever and charismatic, with a flair for the dramatic.
